It’s another Sunday edition. It’s weird, when I began this blog I had lots and lots of people submitting music to me that wasn’t on iTunes or even for sale. Yet in the past several months it’s been a draught for music of that nature.Speaking of draught. I’ve noticed that a lot of the movies I’ve seen coming into this summer season have been a bit flat from hype and expectations. Interestingly several of the big box office smashes have been less than stellar in delivering movie enjoyment. Yes, I’ve seen Spiderman 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 3, along with several others. All of them have had story-line flaws. Even with Oceans 13 it was dead with the story. Last night I finally got to see a movie that at least remembered the story.
That movie was Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer. That’s right, of all the sequels of late, it’s the only one that didn’t go so overboard with effects and action that it forgot the actual story. The other good thing about it is that it wasn’t over-hyped as well. Spiderman, Pirates, and Oceans were all over done and hyped. It didn’t hurt the box office rake, but I think the shelf life on those won’t be as good as the Silver Surfer. Why? The story was there. It was marred with a few cheesy moments, but it had a great blend of humor, one-liners, action, and competition that more than made up for those moments. I will recommend it.
Today’s song has lyrics that actually reflect my feeling toward some of these blockbusters, and on another level it works in terms of the story that goes on in Fantastic Four as well. Interesting when you consider it’s about a person that is feeling ignored by the world. In FF they were working on getting the Silver Surfer to stop in helping destroy earth, it was almost as easy as asking Please. 🙂
Of course I’m over simplifying that comparison a bit. And the real story about this person in the song is more like a disgruntled worker who doesn’t want to go on a rampage. Have you ever felt like an outsider? Where people are looking at you funny because you don’t fit in? Been jeered at? Made fun of? I wonder why some people take that and become very angry and outwardly aggressive, while others would internalize and hide, and still others would attempt to turn it around and be humorous. Hmmm…
Seems like I might know a lot about those lyrics. Musically speaking the song has a strange electronic meets organic epic vibe. In between the mega crunch guitars you hear these swirling synths that tend to swim outside of the normal speaker range. I think that’s cool. I know that in my past I’ve tried doing that with things like vocals and guitar parts by playing with the phasing between speakers on specific tracks. These synths are doing it as part of their sound, so that takes the pain out of attempting to figure out how to do it.
I’m thinking that I could hear this in a movie as part of a soundtrack. Likely over the ending credits after a film about some sort of a killer who wants to stop killing. Hence another reason for my connection to the Silver Surfer. He takes on a change of heart once he meets Sue Storm. Interesting.
In case the voice sounds familiar to you, I’ll let ya in on a little secret… I wrote the lyrics and melody. I co-wrote the song with Chris when he brought it to me and asked if I’d be interested in messing with it. This is our result. I’m looking for opportunities for which to place this in film or TV. Keep your eyes/ears peeled for it. You could hear it again in the future.
Hi Jody. Nice work. I don’t usually go for Industrial, but your sensitive treatment of a “heavy” item got me to stay and enjoy the track. Have you thought of sending it to Dog the Bounty Hunter? BTW, this is my first time tuning in, and my first thought (on hearing “Chris” sing) was, “Oh, so Jody only plays guys that sound like Jody.” LOL!
Best wishes,

Ha ha ha, no I don’t play only people that sing like me. Now that would be funny.
I haven’t heard of Dog the Bounty Hunter. What station is it on? Make sure you make a habit of coming back, or exploring other posts and you’ll see a much bigger variety. Thanks for the comment and the suggestion.
Very nice.. edgy.. hard hitting but very easy to listen too!
