A vast majority of success in the world comes from things that take a long time or journey to complete. Sometimes though, you can have the really long journey and at the end of it all you have is – a long journey. Then there’s the occassional quick idea that turns into an instant hit and has a long journey associated with it (one such story I can think of is The Simpsons – they’re still going). Then there’s something like Iraq, that’s a really long journey going nowhere.
When I go mountain biking, I’m often more excited by the longer rides. I think the reason is due to actually going somewhere on an exploration and coming back. Or I could just be insane. Actually there is a mountain bike trek that I would really like to do. It runs across the top of the Rocky Mountains from Canada to Mexico (the Great Divide Ride). A very long North to South run. I believe it takes about 2 to 3 months to make the entire ride and it’s intense. How could it not be? I mean c’mon it’s a mountainous ride away from any major city life camping for a couple of months straight. The big thing is that there’s only a small window of time to do it each year. I believe its from roughly late May to early September.
I don’t know why I want to do it. Probably because it sounds like a major adventure. Hmmm, ya, it is. Also because I do like to mountain bike. I have the distinct feeling you can’t just go on a whim. It takes planning, it takes training. Something I haven’t done much of. I like to ride and I attempt to go most weekends. But it would be a different story going for several months straight every day. Plus it would be with more gear than I’m used to like a tent, sleeping bag, food, water, and whatever else would be needed. Not to mention I’d have to figure out how to continue blogging from the top of a mountain. 🙂 Consider it a life goal that I’ve just made public.
Speaking of long journeys for a band. Here’s a band that had a long journey. I first heard of them through my friends in Las Vegas, Brian Festone (Feston), and Dave Meeks (the guitarist from Big Bad Zero). They’re always into stuff that isn’t always mainstream. Then of course there’s the B movie of The Cutting Edge. That’s one of those DVD’s that I have in my collection because I dig DB Sweeny’s performance, the cocky Hockey player. In that movie is probably Dan Reed Networks biggest American hit ‘Baby Now I’. That is actually on iTunes.
This particular song is a duet between him and Nuno Bettancourt from Extreme fame. At least that’s what I was told when I bought the disc. If my information is incorrect then I have to slap Brian and Dave around next time I’m in Las Vegas. The album this comes off is called The Heat I believe it was their third CD. I don’t own any others. But I know that Jeff Soto has all of them in his possession. He was also a fan of Dan Reed Network too. I think the main reason for that is Jeff had a band called Slam long before I had met him that had a similar thing going on. Not to mention Jeff knows Nuno, but I don’t know if he knows Dan – though I wouldn’t see why not.
I’m under the impression that Dan Reed is still around doing things, but I’m amazed that he hasn’t gotten all of his stuff to iTunes. It makes me wonder if the label still owns it and doesn’t care or not. But if Dan has the rights to it, he ought to fix that travesty. Of course most of America never got into Dan’s sound. I grant you it is different, but I like the difference he produced. Don’t you?
Unfortunately there’s no real links to provide you to finding this song or his music (other than one Album on iTunes). So make sure you troll the stores. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
Now I’m off to go pretend to train for mountain biking across the Rockies.
p.s. If you follow the link to Dan’s myspace page, you’ll see he’s been on a big journey since the days of Dan Reed Network.
