I got to see some great songwriters the other night. That’s one perk of being in one of the music capitals, there’s the opportunity to see amazing talent playing to few people. Actually in all reality it’s quite sad in a way. But then this is the land of entertainment and a lot of the people here are attempting to break into the biz as it is, so they are self enveloped. I ought to know, I’m here.
There are certain songwriters that I’m friends with and if I get a chance to see them I know it will be good. In addition to Warren Sellars, John Stowers and Dee Biggs, I got to see two other amazing writers – Chuck Cannon and Mark Luna. Chuck has written some huge hits that are probably more well known in country circles. However his chops as a performer are insane. He is humble, personable, and carries a smile the entire time on stage. He reminds me of a musical, happy version of Sam Elliott when Sam plays a bouncer in the movie Roadhouse (Rent it, it’s a redneck hoot). The other surprize was Mark Luna. This guy has a voice from somewhere else. Both Mark and Chuck have some of the most clever lyrics I’ve ever heard. I will be featuring both of them here on the blog soon.
Today we’re seeing and hearing KT Tunstall. She’s a new sensation coming out of the UK, well, maybe not exactly new, but certainly fresh. She’s got a sense of rhythm that reminds me of well… me. It’s groovy, it’s sly, it’s dark, it’s bouncy, it’s mysterious, it’s just damn sharp and good. This song is pure unadulterated brit pop and it’s one of my favorite styles. She takes it to a slightly different place with her sensibility and that’s a great thing.
While the video doesn’t seem to add up to the lyrics in my opinion, it’s still a treat to watch. That’s about the only way to get something to work, make sure it’s entertaining if it’s gonna be anything. I’ve heard there are 3 versions of the video. This is the only one I’ve seen. Doesn’t matter, it’s the song that counts and count it does.
If you do a little search on YouTube, you’ll find KT doing a live performance of I Want You Back. I highly recommend it. It’s even more of that rhythmic goodness I’m talkin’ ’bout.
Don’t own any KT Tunstall yet? What the hell is wrong with ya? Go get it.
Now.
(** Disclaimer: If KT’s label decides they don’t like what they suddenly see, I’ll have to hide the audio from the server. The post will remain, cause I like clever. **)
