Every now and then it’s good to remind yourself that you’re still alive. As much as it can be a real downer with emotions and things we get ourselves into, if you’re still alive there must be something going well. I’m as guilty as anyone to occasionally have a bad day. But for the vast majority of the time I’m even keeled on the positive side of things. On monday, Memorial Day, I laid out in my yard to get some sun.
There I am, I’m on grass, a living thing, or really lots of living things. As I’m lying face down there are birds flying all around the yard (more living things), singing there bird calls and landing on tree (trees are living things too) branches and/or taking off again. I felt something crawling on me after a few minutes. I turn to look and it’s an ant, ants are living things last I checked. I brushed it off and a little while later I felt another, then another. So I did get a few ant’s crawling on me during my time in the sun. It’s a grounding feeling to get down into grass like that. There’s a microcosm of a world there in the back yard.
Actually if you stop to take a look around once in a while, you might notice there is a whole hell of a lot of living thing all around. My neighbors have several dogs that love to bark, most likely because they don’t get to get out of their confined backyard, that is actually all concrete and a swimming pool. They’re likely jealous of other dogs that get walked around the neighborhood. So they run to the fences and yelp – living things acknowledging other living things. There’s even cats that like to hang out around my property. They hide under the bus or sometimes just in my front yard.
The infamous line is: Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop to take a look around once in a while, you might miss it. Oh how true it is. Do you ever stop to take a look around?
I’m not sure what the impetus of naming a band Living Things is, but hey, someone had to do it. Why not them? Just like in nature there are things that can probably be explained by science but to the average person it’s like blind luck or totally random. That’s kinda how I feel about the lyrics in this song. I mean, what exactly is a bom bom bom? It’s really just a guttural sound uttered to a rhythm. Lyrics don’t always have to make sense. Often they’re trumped by the music, melody and vibe.
I can’t over analyze this song. It’s a groovy, vibey, party-y, type-y, song-y. It’s a feel good thing. Perfect for when you just want to stop, take a look around and notice what exactly is going on in your living world. Or in this case, in my living world, since this is my post. I like the raw guitar, I like the low key vocal. It all comes together in a very nice package. Don’t ya think?
Now, go update your iTunes as Apple just released 7.2. I’m guessing that you’ll find those DRM free tunes from EMI starting today, or possibly tomorrow. Especially since they promised it would come in May. If not today, then tomorrow is the final day in May, so it has to happen by them, lest they be liars. I don’t know what label Living Things is on, but if it’s EMI, you may very well be able to get this song DRM free for your badass self.
(** Disclaimer: If Living Things label decided to make my living life a living hell, I’ll have to extinguish the audio from the server. The post will remain to show that I do stop to notice life once in a while. **)
