Picking up the pieces and moving on. It’s one of those constants in life. Right? Sometimes thing go wrong and you wind up having to let go and carry on. Such things are happening to various degrees all the time all around us. Today it’s happening for my Dad. After about ten years with his girlfriend they’ve split up. It’s not the most horrendous breakup. Still it’s disappointing as most people thought they made a great couple. Two peas in a pod; they were very much alike. You know when your mom thinks your dad and his girlfriend were good together, then it’s gotta be.
The phone call this morning was actually quite upbeat. It’s probably the first time I’ve heard my dad sound like things are ok, despite the circumstances going on. In fact for a man who hates technology, he sure sounds like someone graduating from University or College. He’s got a new apartment. He’s moved most of his stuff. He only has a cell phone now. He’s planning on picking up a Macbook Pro lappy to replace his aging computer. I’m kinda wondering if maybe he wasn’t cloned and replaced like in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
Normally it was like pulling teeth to get him to swing into the modern world. It was always me asking myself why should I keep pushing at him to modernize if he hates it so much. However, that’s probably the one closest point for getting a conversation that I can get with him now. Maybe it will be even easier to relate now that he’s apparently upgrading certain things in his life. I’m impressed that he’s finally thinking more modern, and it’s a great expansion.
Speaking on expanding horizons…
I still have a stack of good music from the CD Baby meet and greet that occured at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood last Sunday. Today’s Single of the Day is one of those CD’s that was in the stack. Mekiel handed me his CD and graciously asked me to have a listen. He didn’t ask me if I had specific genres that I prefered, though several artists did. Which is a valid question. Especially if you know targeted marketing. If a reviewer is known to really only prefer Death Metal, then it wouldn’t make much sense to hand him/her a CD of flowery singer/songwriter stuff.
That’s not me though. I will do what I can to getting around to listen to something. There’s probably a song in every genre that I could eventually come across and find it enjoyable in some way. Granted I tend to like poppier stuff, but it’s been pretty eclectic here at times so don’t put it past me to at some point feature a Death Metal song – provided I enjoy it in some way. Getting back to Mekiel though. With the stack of music I accumulated that day, there was no way for me to know exactly what everyone described themselves as musically. Thus I was treating my well gotten booty as a treasure trove to sift through.
Mekiel is a horn player and that much I did remember. I was pleasantly impressed when the CD started. As I made my way through the CD, Why Should I was the song that really came to stick with me. Thus it’s my turn to share what I found with you. Now I’m not the most versed with style of music, but I’m liking Mekiel’s lines in this song. It’s got a good flow. In case you haven’t figured out by now, I like when songs have a flow. At least a flow that I can follow. This definitely a groove oriented piece and groove is a key element to flow.
Show Mekiel some love ‘n’ flow if you’re diggin it. We all would be better off in win/win/win situations and that’s why you should.
