I’m much too young to have remembered The Beatles as a viable band that was tangible. Meaning I never saw them live and obviously I’ll never get to see them live. Despite that, their influence is probably the largest singular influence on popular music in history and it probably will always be so. There is one other band that has come close and that is U2. However even U2 is influenced by The Beatles.
It is told in music history that The Beatles began as a skiffle group. Or at least a group that was influenced by the skiffle sound. What is skiffle? Well you’re hearing it now. This is the sound that was pretty popular at the time The Beatles were beginning, so of course they started doing gigs playing this form of music. What a transformation they went through to get from this kind of sound to the massive band they became.
From what I understand about The Old Line Skiffle Combo, they are one of the last true skiffle groups performings in the U.S. as an authentic skiffle group. I don’t think they are McCartney’s age, but I’m sure they’re probably not in their 20’s either.
What amazed me about the music immediately when I heard it was the sound. In an era where technology has become everything they have made a recording that actually has the appearance of being from the 50’s. I’m sure they used modern equipment, but during the mix they obviously ran the EQ and some filters to give it that 50’s vibe. Thinking of that, I wonder what it would be like to do that with some of my music. Not to play it skiffle style, but to mix it 50’s style. I know that for the Christmas CD’s I did, my engineer and I were talking about doing a bunch of re-mixes in the style of The Beatles in terms of panning. However, I think it should be taken a step further and tried like this too.
Either way, I’m really diggin on the energy and vibe that is translated into this song. The whole album as that going on, so go snatch it up. I’m kinda surprised that this particular group isn’t on iTunes. There’s actually several other groups doing a song by the same title, so I’m guessing it’s a cover. A well done cover at that. Who says you can’t appreciate your elders?
