It’s said that in order to clear your mind for creativity you need to have something you do to relax you. I’ve never really thought about it directly until now. My mom is becoming one of those infinite sources of wisdom and ocassionally when I mention something that I’m doing she’ll blurt out that it’s a good thing to do to take your mind off things. One such thing is to exercise, it’s good for the body and as your doing your thing you concentrate on the task at hand. I do lots of sporty type things and never consider them to be exercise, but it’s what they are.
I do run. Running is one way to spend a lot of time running things through your head (pun intended). Sometimes as I’m running I’ll think out things to try in songs. Sometimes, I’ll think about dinner or lunch. Other times I’ll think about a vacation or that I might want to be skiing. Because I own a house with a front and back yard there’s grass and plants that need tending to. Like in the movie The Money Pit, I decided it can’t be that hard so I do it myself. Thus because of my ‘day’ job there are times when I don’t get it done like I should. Non-the-less, gardening is also a way to tend to your head.
I’ve heard that as you’re doing things like those examples it gives your subconscious freedom to work out whatever solutions you need to have solved. Is it really true? I wouldn’t say it works the same for everyone but in my experience it has provided me with much needed recharging that seems to bring about a change in attitude. In turn it leads to some sort of enlightenment.
For some reason today’s song makes me feel like I’m out in my mind working on a solution subconsciously. I tried seeing if there was a definition to the title Soma that would fit the song. However, when I started googling around, I found so many different things that I have no idea if anyone of them are right. When taken collectively, all those results would result in variations on life and that would equate to things that are sampled and spoken of in the song. To that end I’ll have to do some yardwork or running to dwell on it long enough to find some other meaning to it.
One of the surface things that I like about the song is the strange and rhythmic use of a didgeridoo. An instrument you don’t hear often outside of Australia. I also don’t know if it’s a sampled sound he’s using or if it’s a true master of the instrument. It certainly has given me a idea to try provided I can find a damn good didgeridoo player. Anyone know someone who has mastered this instrument that lives in Los Angeles?
In the meantime, if you’re in a mood for exploring different soundscapes – Psyrok is an artist worth biting into.
