Someone asked what happened with the computer, or computers to be exact. Lets just say its been nothing short of trivial. First, on Monday, I had it in my mind to take my lappy in for a repair of the screen. I had some dead pixels and they were starting to get a bit annoying. Before I took the machine in for the repair I did what any smart user does, I backed up all the needed data to my desktop computer so that I could carry on my computing life without a hiccup.
I noticed on the desktop that I couldn’t hear any sound. So I decided to restart the computer. What a time for the desktop to decide fuck it, I’m tired of this hard drive. It wouldn’t restart. I’m running behind schedule so I don’t think about it and I call my buddy George to see if I could get a disk utility program to fix the drive. I had to borrow because my actual disk was locked away inside a CD tray that required the computer to open it.
I took the laptop in. They said it would probably take until Thursday or Friday, I’m really hoping it’s Thursday as I have a writing session on Friday. Not to mention that I’m taking my car in on Friday to have something repaired. So, I finish my day off. I get home and attempt to start doing some repair on the drive to see if I can get it to boot. Everything tried ended up being to no avail. So I went to bed.
I got up yesterday and got yet another program that should have fixed the drive. Actually it said it did, but there were an insane amount of errors. After it was done, I tried to boot up. Nope. Still wouldn’t see the system. Man I get a year and a half of no issues then suddenly I’m without my main comp, and now my production machine takes a shit. I tried the disk utility again, again it claims to have fixed it, and yet no dice when I try to boot.
Now it’s off to Fry’s to get a new hard drive an hope that I can extract needed files off the fucked up drive. I get a nice deal on a massive new hard drive, I get it installed. I put a brand new OS on it. I boot up, then start the install process on some programs. First off the audio. The audio installer claims it can’t see the audio interface. I nearly lose my mind. It’s so stupid in that I don’t have any problems yet when I do get them, it’s major. I finally get the machine booted several times to get it to see the interface. Good, sound is working. Then I decide to take a look at the system profile. The machine is missing a processor. What the FUCK!
This is a problem I had seen before, but only when my recording app had a rare crash. Fairly easy to fix, just unplug and restart. Not this time. I try every method I’ve know to try to get this to get the other processor to go, uh uh. No go. I finally just decide to say fuck it until I get the lappy back. The computer is at least functional. I can install all the software and get my authorizations going. I’ll have to take the desktop in, to find out what the hell has gone wrong with the second processor.
Thus this has been my day for yesterday. That’s the reason I couldn’t get a Single of the Day done. No machine. To top it off, all the music I had lined up was on the lappy and didn’t make it to the desktop. Silly, silly, stupid.
Enough.
I chose today’s song because, I’m saying my computers have done a bad bad thing. I so rarely have problems with them, that it’s way more than frustrating when a simple restart doesn’t fix the problem.
(** Disclaimer: If Chris’s label thinks I’ve done a bad bad thing, I’ll spank that audio right off the server. The post will remain to remind me of the pain of not having a working computer. **)
