For the past couple of days I’ve been waking up much earlier than normal. I’m not sure why. Nothing to do with an alarm. I haven’t used one in some time. I’d like to say it’s because I’m going to bed earlier, but that’s not the case. Thus I’m not feeling as rested as I’d like, not cool. Maybe I’m having weird dreams or something. Well, at least this morning I could say that.
Ever been numb on a body part as you wake up? My right forearm to my fingers was nearing a state of dead when I woke. I wasn’t sleeping on it. You know when you sleep on your arm and you roll over and it smacks you awake in the middle of the night because it’s dead and you can’t move it. Then as you’re coming out of a state of comatose and the body part in question is on pins and needles and you’re shaking it to get some life back in it? Well, that’s not what happened. This was more like, dude, something is pinched.
As I woke, I was coming from some dream where I was in a Steven King type story. I was in a street somewhere where there is snow and I was kickin’ some bottle or canister that had light to it. No clue as to why, then all of a sudden a creature came in relation to the thing and right then – poof I’m awake. I don’t remember many of my sleeping dreams. Actually, I don’t know if I do much dreaming during sleep. The only time I even know is if I awake from it.
What I’m thinking though is that I need to have something like this song going before I hit the hay. It’s a mellow song with a sly groove that gives me a relaxed feeling. Initially when I heard it I was caught by the vocal and the style of it. Then there were parts of the melody that gave rise to thoughts of Seal doing Fly Like An Eagle. I also thought of the theme to the Sopranos. I don’t know why.
I’m all about the modern retro vibe going on with the electric piano and the wha wha guitar. That stuff is cool. But it’s got to be done with taste, and Rob’s got that going on. The drums are nice and tight as well. In fact it’s all very crafty. I like crafty, it’s something head-case musicians get off on. Sneaking cool layered instruments, tight arrangements. Little noises here and there in the mix to hear. The ambiance gives Brother that, I’d like to hit play again type thing that a lot of music doesn’t have. If you find yourself wanting to hit play again, hit the CD Cover or the iTunes link. That way you won’t have to hear my voice on it.
