Once in a while you’ll come across an artist that makes you turn your head sideways like the RCA Victor dog. One band that I had heard in the past couple of years that I felt like that with was Coheed & Cambria. The very first time I heard them I actually thought it was a long lost demo tape of Rush in their early days. I really couldn’t tell if it was Geddy Lee or someone attempting to sound just like him or possibly a female vocalist. Well when it comes to today’s song you might be thinking the same thing.
I knew up front that Jacob is male. But the voice you that you’re hearing certainly can sound deceptive. I’m willing to bet that he gets questioned about it all the time. In fact I can be willing to bet that he’s been compared to Coheed & Cambria (if only for the voice). Realizing that C & C has had a run of popularity in the past couple of years, it wouldn’t be a bad thing. Differing in the music where Jacob is pretty well a piano driven and Coheed & Cambria are steeped in loud guitars. There’s a place for both.
The mood of the song is a tad heavy for subject matter. That’s another area where it’s got some bite. Away from the voice I can imagine that Jacob may have studied songwriting from a little bit of Freddy Mercury. Lots of dramatic things going with dynamics and pauses. The one thing I find is that upon multiple listens my view about the song changes in terms of what I hear in it. Another artist I’m connecting him to is Tori Amos. So far these are all good things to be associated with.
As for me… I’ve got some good things starting to happen in my neck of the woods. Until the papers are signed, I’ll just tease and say it’s good stuff.
Think about Jacob’s song. Hear it a few times and I’m sure you’ll end up buying it.
