Simply put I have no idea what telescope eyes are. Might have been more appropriate for me to say, what?!? Lyrically speaking I don’t get it. Musically speaking is a different story. The music is definitely what drew me to Eisley, that and the vocals. With that in mind I concentrate my thoughts there.
Actually I do remember reading an interview with Ed Roland of Collective Soul once. In that interview he mentioned that there was a particular song he was writing and agonizing over the lyrics. At some point in the writing process one of the other members in Collective Soul said to him who cares if it’s nonsense, make it up. So he did. No one seemed to chew him out. Another great example of an artist making it up is Steve Miller. He made up a phrase that says the pompitous of love. Turns out that means nothing, or at least didn’t until he made it up. Maybe Eisley has some meaning to their words.
The song has a nice heavy brooding to it in the intro. Then it really kicks in in the chorus. I really dig the sound and tone of the guitars in the chorus. Very dense and crunchy, a sound idea that I wouldn’t mind using in a song or two of mine. Actually of everything in the song it’s the guitars that really bring me in. There is a quick break before the last chorus where you can also hear the electric piano pretty well – nice change up there.
Vocally there is something haunting about Sherri’s voice. I wouldn’t normally think I’d listen to a voice like this (I’m people say the same of mine). But in the context of this song it works beautifully. I haven’t had the time to fully explore more of their music, but I’m going to make a point of doing so. You should to.
They do have a video of this song on their site, so go check the visual candy at some point.
(** Disclaimer: If Eisley’s label decides to extend their eyes my way, I’ll not cry when I make the audio disappear from the server. The post shall remain as an ode to the what. **)
