As I mentioned yesterday I was going to NAMM. It wasn’t the same crack candy store that it usually is. Several of my favorite companies haven’t had any real new additions to their lineups. Nothing that made me go, yeah I have to have that. The big one for the moment is Apple. Yeah, I know the iPhone = iWant. Musicially speaking though, no new computer updates and no music software updates. My contact actually mentioned they thought they were gonna have something to announce and then… NOT (think Borat).
So I turned my sites to some companies that I hadn’t talked to before. One guitar effects company called T.C. Electronics. They make some real nice high-end effects. So that is a nice hook up. The other is a company that makes a real nice synth. I had heard about the issues that they had with it last year – taking pre-orders and then never delievering it. Chris, my mixer on the christmas project and good buddy, had me go to their booth and got me to mess around with it. It was extremely smooth and I could see some great possibilities with it. So I got a chance to speak with their A&R guy and chat with him about possible endorsement as well.
While milling about running into lots of friends that I haven’t seen in a while and hangin with Jeff Scott Soto and a few other friends, I saw Lisa Loeb walking by. At least I quite sure it was her, I didn’t stop her to talk. It’s why I chose this song for today. It sparked a memory for the time when I auditioned for her band. I had heard of her when I got the call. She was putting a new band together since she left the previous one behind sometime after her first huge hit (this song). So I was given a tape to learn a couple of songs and showed up at the audition the next day. I remember sitting and waiting my turn when a girl walked by. She smiled and said hi and I replied hi back. The thing I noticed was that she was about as tall as I was while I was sitting down. She disappeared into the room where the people were going to audition.
20 minutes later I was called into that room and sitting there on the stage was the same girl. Turns out it was Lisa. At the time I ended up bringing my guitar that had a Jesus painted on it. I should have brought an Acoustic guitar, but I didn’t have a good one and they wanted a contrast. She was extremely nice. When she saw the guitar she got real curious about it. Asked me some questions and seemed to be generally inquisitive about it and me. Time came to sit down and actually play a little together. I kinda blacked out my performance. There are a few times where I’ve gotten so lost in playing where it didn’t matter what I played, I was just enjoying it – no matter what. That was one of those few times.
What I do remember was standing up from it after it was over. Height suddenly became a serious issue. Recall I said she was about as tall as I was sitting down. When we both stood up there was no hiding the fact that I dwarfed her. In the back of my mind I knew that was the moment I wasn’t getting the gig. Ah well, she was still very nice. I had a good time on that audition. I say she deserves the support. She’s also an icon for non-signed musician’s because this song may have been the first non-signed song in history to hit number one on the billboard charts due of a movie it appeared in. I don’t recall the name of the movie as I never saw it. I know shoot me, a movie buff and I haven’t rented some things yet.
Well, it’s time to head back down to Anaheim – other friends have been buggin me to come hang out. Since I don’t get to see them much, I’m going.
If you don’t own this song, why?
