I’ve gotten off to a slow start this week. It began with a late night last night. Which leads me to a bold post today. Mostly because the group that actually wrote the song are notorious for going after people. So this may come down quickly we’ll see. As for last night… I played in a poker tournament. I made it down to the final two tables and ended up making two mistakes that cost me making the final table and even winning. It was pretty sad. I went out 13th out of 200. Ouch. I still ended up a winner as I then went to the cash tables and proceeded to win back my buy-in plus a few extra bucks. Of course my buddy Mike likes to play longer than is often considered good. So we left late and it’s about a 2 hour drive. Didn’t get home ’till early this morning.
I do have a little connection to the creators of A Mighty Wind. I have co-written some songs with a songwriter by the name of Johnny Elkins. At one point he came to me with a song he had written with C.J. Vanston and asked if I would sing it for their demo. I was flattered that he asked me to do it. I actually didn’t connect the C.J. Vanston thing at first. Until I went to his studio. Then it dawned on me. He was a pretty cool dude. Had a great little setup for recording.
In case you’re not aware of C.J. he’s done a lot of the music work on things with Christopher Guest. Spinal Tap – a required lesson for anyone that plans on being a professional musician (I will go so far to say that if you haven’t seen this movie and you think you’re a musician, you ain’t a musician yet). Of course he’s also dealt with other things too, but A Might Wind was new when I had done the demo. Unfortunately after all the recording I guess C.J. wasn’t happy with my voice on the song so it got scrapped. Oh Well.
This is just the song to give me a kick in the pants eh? It’s severely different from the original and that is something I really enjoy about it. Much faster and much more mellow at the same time. Good combination. I think there is a great creative genius going on with Christopher Guest, C.J. and their circle of friends that make all those movies he comes up with. I’m not as huge a fan as say my buddy Grant Baccicco from Throwing Toasters (he got me a t-shirt from A Mighty Wind at some function and yes I do wear it from time to time), but I still enjoy watching all the movies.
(** Disclaimer: If the original writers come after me, I’ll have to comply and remove the audio but it will make a great story being a non-signed artist helping promote someone else and being threatened. The post will remain cause that’s the kind of guy I am. **)
