Ahhhhhh, Monday. How often do you feel disjointed from the world having to trudge back in to work? It’s interesting to hear the multitudes of people who feel so down on getting to work. I wonder what it stems from. Not a long enough absence? Hate the job? Lack of sex? Poor diet? Low pay? Dislike the co-workers? Stress? Can’t connect with others? I’m sure the list could be endless. What’s your reason?
What about holiday fervor? Are you chock full of the end of the year festivities? Had your fill of Christmas? Kwanza? Hanukkah? The obvious one is Christmas. It starts so damn early that it has become sickening. What’s funny about that is how in lots of Christmas stories everyone talks about how nice it is to have that Christmas spirit all year long. The problem is most people end up learning that spirit is based on buying gifts, not on being kind. I see that as a huge disconnect from just being human.
Don’t get me wrong it’s awful nice to get a gift.
Sometimes it’s the heart and soul that went into the gift that makes it more appealing. Or at least that’s my hope for this year. I’ve toiled away on a huge project and enlisted the help of several friends and family members to get it done. It’s been two years in the making for me and it’s going to end up about the only thing I can give with any satisfaction this year. How about you?
Despite that, I know that I’m going to feel no connection to the concept of buying big gifts. Mostly because it’s not within my situation to do so this year. Ever get that far down? Where the only thing you can give is your time?
Phil here has a great tune that I can imagine being in the likes of say ‘Garden State’. Another great movie about huge issues of connection between people. It’s quirky and has that Garden State feel to it. I certainly hear how he could become a media darling in similar film in the future. This is an instance where there are no amazing production tricks, it’s strickly about the song.
Close your eyes and picture that scene in ‘Garden State’ where Andrew Largeman is back home in a friend’s basement with all the local friends and couple of underage girls drinking and taking drugs. That to me feels like the ulitmate No Connection right there. Andrew obviously isn’t into that life. Funny thing is, I’ve had that very same type of experience. Where going home and meeting up with friends that never left and traveled do exactly that; sit around and get high. Support Phil, keep him from having to have a Garden State moment, buy his song.
I do have one question as far as the lyrics – who is “they”? Do you know?
That song rocked my face off! It kind of sneaks up on ya, and then pulls a paper bag over your head and says, “CONNECT THIS!!!”
POW!!! Somber toned beatdown. I like the mid-song guitar rift. It was a nice little addition.
Over all a mellow, engaging ballad with a message.
It’s certainly got a chorus that sneaks right on in.
Wow, one extreme to the other. In the basement on drugs or sick of Christmas before it starts. Bah Humbug. Well I shouldn’t really comment on this because I haven’t listened to the song yet as I’m at work but will do when I get home and although I’m in the same boat finding myself only being able to give perhaps my time and nothing else its not going to stop me from loving Christmas. For me its probably more about spending that time with Family and not the gifts or stress. If we could all block out the retain… Read more »
Here, here. Glad to know it touched a chord. Yes, do hear it. Time is the most important thing you have.
Very cool song. You are very right Jody, time is the most important thing you have. And sharing it with those less fortunate, or with the people you love is priceless. The best gift I ever received was from my husband who gave me a date book where he’d filled in things for us to do together throughout the year. Things as simple as walking the dogs or going for coffee, meeting for lunch or something more intimate, or having a video movie marathon with the kids. Time trumps money any day.
Sounds like an awesome gift!
