Ok, how many of you out there have been following this blog for a while? C’mon show of hands or actually a show of comments please. Pipe in. Who remembers the very first song I blogged about to start the whole thing off? C’mon, no cheating by loading up the first page. Maybe I’ll consider a prize, provided I don’t see a spike in page views for the first post ever.
Give up? Ok, well it was connected to me and to this artist that I’m featuring on Fallen Friday. Remember, Fallen Friday’s are not always about one hit wonders, but also acts that were once great too. You see, I distinctly remember my parents listening to Nick Lowe when I was a kid. He had several songs that I really dug as a child. One of them was this song Cruel To Be Kind. So much so that I did a cover of it and it happened to be the very first post that I had here on Single of the Day. You can follow that link in a moment.
Bummer I blew for everyone hoping there was gonna be a prize. I guess that makes me like Patrick the Spoiler. Now there’s a bit of trivia. Who does that song? If you can tell me that, then you’re really going through the artists I’ve featured with a fine tooth comb. No, I never blogged about that song, but I did blog about the artist that wrote and sang it. If he chimes in, he’s not eligible to win. Hmmm, what should I dole out as a prize. I know. I will offer a pre-advanced copy of my Christmas CD called “Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future”. It will be on iTunes in the next two weeks provided all goes as planned. However, it won’t be available on hard copy of CD until next year. Thus you’ll be getting it personally signed by me a year in advance as your gift this year. If you can tell me who wrote and sang “Patrick the Spoiler”.
I have the feeling there’ll be a bunch of entries so, in the event of lots of entries, I will randomly pick one and announce it in the next few days.
There’s not a whole lot that I can really say about Nick Lowe other than that he had a real penchant for writing great pop tunes. He has a long and varied career, something that a true musician would hope for. Hell, I’d like to have a career like that. I’m still working on it. Getting closer everyday.
I will suggest that take a moment to compare Nick’s super pop original with my interpretation of his song. Doh, don’t let me forget that he wrote it with Ian Gomm. Can’t diss the co-writer. Actually I think Ian has a version of Cruel To Be Kind floating out there with him singing. I need to find that version to see what I think of it.
Enjoy. Make the comparison. Find the information, and I hope you win.
***** Update *****
The writer/performer of Patrick the Spoiler has offered a signed copy of his latest CD in addition to my offer of my CD. How cool is that?!? You can win two CD’s.
(** Disclaimer: If Nick’s label decides they’re unhappy and wish to be Cruel to me, I’ll be kind and remove the audio from the server. The post will remain. **)
