For those of you in the U.S. of A. you probably thought you wouldn’t get a new Single of the Day today, but surprise you did! It’s labor day, the long weekend holiday that sorta signals the end of summer to many of us here in the states. Otherwise for the rest of the globe, its yet another day in the race towards the end of life. But today, I’d like to slow it down a bit. As the infamous Ferris Bueller once said – Life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and take a look around once in a while you might miss it. So I present a flowing little ditty called Fiona by a musician by the name of Marcus Eaton.
Myself I’m recovering a little from a bit of sun stroke. I was out mountain biking yesterday and for some reason the end of summer isn’t anywhere close here in Southern California. I took a ride up Sycamore canyon north of Malibu. It was fantastic day to be outside. Clear and a tad too warm. But at the beach front it was a little cooler. Riding Sycamore is a bit deceiving. It starts at the ocean on the east side of PCH, then goes up in the hills. So you start with a cool breeze, but as soon as you get a mile or so in, the heat factor goes up. By the time you hit the top of the hill (called a mountain in California) it’s damn hot. I had to stop a couple of times in the shade to cool down to avoid over heating. I used to just go full bore, but I’ve decided I don’t like getting sick in the heat anymore.
Why do I call it a hill? Well, I spent a lot of time growing up in Utah and I’m used to the Rocky Mountains. Thus, I kinda think of that mountain range as my standard. While these hills at the foot of the ocean are big, they just don’t feel like mountains to me. I’m kinda betting that Marcus might feel the same way. He’s apparently from Idaho. The Rockies pass through that state too.
I was turned onto Marcus Eaton by my next door neighbor. He and his wife saw him play at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. I got the CD I liked what I heard so much. This is the lone true singer songwriter song on the album, the rest of it is much more done up full band and rockin. Come to think of it, damn, I haven’t seen my neighbor in about a year. He works for Mark Burnette on the Apprentice, or at least he did. But he was out of town all the time once that show was rolling. It put a strain on his marriage. They split up and ended up renting the house out. They’re about to put it on the market in the next month. Bummer, they were really cool people. Well, that was an odd tangent.
Getting back to Marcus. The rest of his music is smorgashboard of textures. Very clean and precisely recorded organic instruments. Stylistically its got a Pop flavor due to his voice, but it’s mashed up with elements of Rock, Jazz, and some Alternative for good measure.
I go running in the mornings when it’s not hot enough to fry eggs on the street. Every so often this song comes on and I feel like I’m on a journey to meet some long lost love. It’s a song that gives me a sense of travel and getaway to a nice beautiful place. When I’m running in the streets of a city, that’s a nice sensation to have. Plus since most of my fellow countrymen and countrywomen tend to travel on this weekend, why not provide a bit of the soundtrack for it?
Get this CD, you won’t be disappointed. I swear.
