Today’s Single of the Day caught me off guard. I’m not normally into Lounge or House music at all. Which is what DJ Apocalypze has put as his main genres on Myspace. That’s likely to work in his favor here on Single of the Day because he’s the one and only House selection for the new category I made. I also filed it under Jazz because there’s definitely overtones of Jazz in there.
As I’m sitting here listening and typing about the music, I’m treading into a territory know as the what would my life be like if…
What would my life be like if I had actually been a hip scenester in Los Angeles back in the 90’s? I mean, where would I be now if had been out to the dance clubs shakin’ it to creations like this? Not to mention the things I start to associate with that atmosphere, the booze, the drugs, the women, the style. Now, I’m thinking, oops, I got the wrong decade. This song is titled 70’s Bush. Funny that. Ok, instead of Los Angeles in the 90’s, I’m now imagining something well out of my reality – New York in the 70’s. My parents were there. So maybe I can channel some of that vibe subconsciously. Only if I were to be doing that, I’d probably end up with the Beatles.
The Beatles?!? Yes, the Beatles. If I gathered one thing about my parents, they were Hippies and my dad wanted to be John Lennon. Yikes, that means I need to forget the channeling. Hippies and Hipsters are two completely different things. Not to mention, I’ve always been more partial to Paul. I do dig Lennon, but McCartney always seemed to have better melodies to me. What a debate that can rage. I’ll stop there.
Getting back to my New York fantasy in the 70’s scene. I’m thinking it’s high tide of Disco such as Saturday Night Fever and lots and lots of cocaine. Hmmm… I’m still not hitting the mark. Ok, I’ll pretend there was House music at places like Studio 54. Is that the right club name? The place where all the trendsetters went to be seen and all the Hipsters went to hope to be seen. Now I have the mood. I’m going to slink back in the booth with a couple of scantily clad women under my arms, toss back a few gin and tonics, then snort a line of blow through a rolled up $100 bill. There would have been sex right there on the table, an orgy. The crowd would watch and we’d be setting the trend.
Had that been my reality I’d now be the King of pain here in Los Angeles. I would have become an influential power broker who now owns half of Marina Del Ray. I’d have gone to rehab, cleaned up and become completely organic in everything I do – yet I’d still be rich. Ah the life I could have led. I blame that on the title 70’s Bush (Bush, not the president, but the body part) What are you fantasies? Do you ever have a What If Moment? Do tell.
As for 70’s Bush part I & II. I’m a little confused why’s it’s got two parts listed in it’s name. But then it’s instrumental and its grooves, so who cares? As I started out sayin in the post, I really don’t listen to this style. I can’t even tell you what compelled me to choose it. Something in that groove, or melody just stuck with me and I said to myself: self, you’ve got to share this one. So there ya have it. I picked this and I’m sticking with it for today. My choice as to where I truly hear this gaining traction? In a movie with a club scene. You know when the two main characters slide into a slinky bar/lounge, waiting for their business connection to show up. I hope he’s shopping it to film and TV.
Drop DJ Apocalypze a line and let him know you heard him hear. His myspace page has more things to offer, so holla at da man. Time for me to go get my mellow groove on.
