First you thumb your nose at someone who has wronged you. You stand up and face your new horizon and then you start to second guess yourself. If you followed yesterday’s post, then you’ll understand that opening sentence. Go ahead, check out yesterday’s song, I’ll wait…
Ok, are you back? Good, now we can get on with today’s song.
I envision this is the concept of being wishy washy. Something I tend not to be. But I can be forgiving if I’m presented with a good enough reason for whatever reconciliation there should be. And provided that I agree with it. I’ve had very few cases of it, but I can do it. Otherwise it’s turn my back on ya and don’t fuck with me. However when someone has wronged me and they know it, they usually never speak to me again. The funny thing is, I’m a nice guy, I just don’t tolerate ill manners when they are mean-spirited in nature. You shouldn’t either.
Funny how songs about going back and forth in a relationship tend to be groovier songs. This a nice funk RnB type thing. I have a song called “Going Around” which is a bit more rock based, though it has a slight swing groove too it. Thus that’s probably why I get that impression.
Unified Tribe has a smooth sound. I’m always amazed at bands that have such a large membership. They have 12. I can’t fathom how they end up making money on a gig, then again, I don’t play RnB – maybe there’s more money there when you’re not signed. Especially when it’s hard enough with four members. Touring must be a real trick to keep everyone happy. Hell my tour bus can hold 15 people for sleeping. However there’s no way I’d ever want to tour with that many people on it. Maybe 8 possibly 9, but not 15. Its close quarters and its easy to get annoyed even when everyone gets along. My hat is off to large groups that can do it successfully.
I like the vocal sound, it’s got a nice blend. The beat is groovy and mellow. I can sit and sway back and forth with a little smile on my face. The recording is nice and tight a very pro. I’ve stated it before, I’m not an RnB or even a funk connisuere, so I don’t know how modern the feel on the song is. For me though, I’m getting into retro key sounds, and I hear an electric piano in there that is similar to a rhoads or a wurlitzer. I tend to put my sounds through a bit more distortion and tweaking, but then I’m rock – what do you expect?
Musicially there’s a lot of instrumentation going on here. Writing wise, I actually appreciate the key change at the end of the song. It helps to move the song and keep the interest up because most of the song is a simple jam for each part. As I sit here and listen for the third time, I really like the sampled background vocal that repeats with a delay into the fade. That’s fairly snazzy. I may have to steal that production idea sometime in the future.
I’ve been a bit busy in the studio so I haven’t explored a vast majority of Unified Tribe’s catalog, but they do have several CD’s. I’d recommend exploring them. I know I will. I’m always up for the expanding horizons. Obviously you coming back on a daily basis means you are too! Buy it.
p.s. – they have a very tricked out website.
