Ah the art of the spoon. I don’t mean the eating utensil you put in your mouth, oh no. I mean the sexual connotated version. Why? This band actually has a very sexual vibe on this song even though it’s lyrics go absolutely nowhere in that direction. That’s a very key thing. I’m quite surprised that this band hasn’t been a bigger hit. They are signed, but that really isn’t helping them much, or I could be very wrong.
In the wake of bands like Keane and Coldplay its a shame that this band has been overlooked. Maybe the US has always overhyped our British counterparts. Spoon hails from Austin TX, home to another one of my most favorite bands that I’ve talked about here on Single of the Day before – King’s X. Ok, maybe I’m downplaying them a little, they are after all out on tour with another band with a slightly bigger name: Death Cab For Cutie.
The thing I really like about this song is it’s simplicity. Its hard to remain this simple in a song and to hold a listeners attention, at least to hold my attention. Being a musician I do tend to get bored with a lot of music in a relatively short period of time if there isn’t something that really digs into me. Not only is it musically simple, the lyrics themselves are pretty sparse in that its the same thing over and over. It’s that sexual vibe that I was talking about earlier. You can imagine that this singer is probably changing everything about his body as he’s singing the line to change the effect and the emotion. It comes across as if he really means it a different way every time he sings it. Much like an actor would do as they rehearse a line to make sure they deliver it with the right conviction and feeling when it comes up in a performance.
I’ve not seen them live so I don’t know if they possess a keen performance chop. But I have to imagine from the recording they must have some cool rock attitude for performing. I would like to find out.
As usual, buy the song if you dig it. If not, express your concern over my choices on my blog.
(** Disclaimer: If their label ends up disliking my use of the song here, I’ll remove faster than you can pull a spoon out of your mouth. The words will stay if that does happen. **)
