Becoming What You Resist

I remember myself as well as numerous other friends and even complete stranger at some point in time saying that they don’t wish to grow up like their parents. Though that’s not the backbone of this song it certainly a parallel for what Seth is conveying in the lyrics. What happens is that people change, the become a part of what they dislike or fight against. Mostly in the fact that it’s inevitable due to human nature. It’s so evident in the corporate world. But it also spills over into our other worlds. I know too many cases where people end up realizing that they say things there parents used to say or they do things they claimed they’d never do.

I remember the first time that I heard this song. I simply loved the groove. I was also floored by the fact that Seth is a bass player. A solo bass player that sings. Similar to the standard singer songwriter type, only his musical accompaniment is a bass. Watching Seth perform is also a study of intensity. This song to me is about empowerment and dismay between friends. Where the listener is the protagonist that is watching the world with a partner change in a way that isn’t what was planned upon by the two people involved. This recorded version includes drums by Ed Toth and guitar parts by Larry Marciano. Yes, that’s Ed Toth of Vertical Horizon fame.
