Fan of the early 80’s movies? Some are downright steeped down into the category of cult status. There is one in particular that this song title conjures up for me. John Cusack starred in a movie called Better Off Dead. A teen angst type thing. Definitely low budget. The reason why I know this? Because there’s a sub-story in the movie that involves skiing. The ski scenes in the movie are filmed in Utah. At least I’m pretty of that. I’m thinking it’s Snowbird to be exact.
Being that I love to ski, and that I can’t wait to get back up to Park City in a week or so to do some more skiing this year, I had to bring up that movie. I’m a sucker for most of John’s movies. I think he had a great sense of irony and sarcasm that just worked. That sums up why I’ll go see movies he releases now. High Fidelity is another good one where he plays a music snob breaking up with his girlfriend. Damn John, sure did a lot of movies where you break up with the girl and were awkward about it didn’t ya?
That becomes a matter of balls. Yesterday it was a heavy set of balls. Today it’s more of a southern fried greasy set of balls. Whiskey Brown came to my attention via another recent featured artist here on Single of the Day. Thus I tripped by their website and ompa out jumps this song. It popped right out of my speakers and into my body. Instant groove. Got me hoppin’ in my seat. That’s no small feat based on the amount of music I listen to and create.
I like the raw vibe going on. Pure balls rock. I also dig the very beginning with the “this song is hard.” with the laugh. Sets up the tone and attitude nicely. I’m betting that you’re shakin’ your head back and forth. Girls are probably letting their hair down, writhing from side to side and running their hands up and down their sides. Guys are probably thinking where’s my beer? And stomping their feet, wondering where their muscle car or Harley is.
Driving guitar riffs, no holds barred amps turned up for distortion, it’s all good fun. Do they go to 11? Thumpin drums, sly bass, and whiskey tainted vocals for that sandpapered edge of rasp. Sprinkle in some fun twists on common phrases and that’s a downright perfect recipe for rock. It all adds up to being juicier than juicycampus.com. Don’t leave home without it. Go buy it now. Do not pass go. Click the iTunes link (or grab the whole CD at CD Baby) now! Your soul will thank you for it.
