In the midst of turmoil comes creative juices. At least that’s something I’ve read and I’ve heard. I know full well that sometimes this can be true. Other times it can be totally detrimental. Luckily I’m having a bit of a push to get some music done, some of which is creative for me, some of which is creative for other parties. While not a complete balance I know that I’m pushing to get as much done as I can. Imposing deadlines on my own thing at the same time as attempting to work to some deadlines on other projects.
Today is full day. A remodel effort in the house is nearly 1/3 done for the bathroom. I need to run an errand to pick some stuff up for that. Then I have a film trailer that I’m doing a score for. After which I have a guest spot on Radio Buzzd to DJ today as well. This evening will be more of the film trailer. I have to get it done by mid morning tomorrow. I’m about 1/2 done with all the parts. Once I complete that I’ll have to do a couple of quick edits on what I wrote to fit the scheme of what the trailer was looking for.
Why? Well, I have an arrangement that I get to keep the rights to what I write. Thus I’m going after the feel they want with a full sized set of cues in each section (of which there are 3). Then I will edit what I compose to fit the frame of what they asked for. I’m composing with that in mind. Thus it will be easy to do it. The bonus is, one cue I’ve written and completed yesterday for the trailer is already being directed at Fox Sports who asked for a certain type of cue for NASCAR. Bingo, I happen to have finished a piece for this trailer that can already get used again. Love that – work to create the music, then let the music work for me.
That’s the direction I think that Arrest My Sister may eventually go. Here’s a song that is very much got a vibe of College Rock meets the 70’s and Garage Rock. There’s such a mishmash of styles going on that it’s kinda hard to say it’s – that. Oddly they kinda remind me of what I was attempting to achieve in my first band. Such a conglomeration of styles and sounds that it would be original.
Are they original? To an extent. Will it ever be commercial by mass radio appeal – not likely. Does it mean it’s no good, heck no. Arrest My Sister has a vibe and musicians that can obviously play. Would the music be more appealing to the masses if it was produced with a more commercial sound using their style? I think so, but that doesn’t mean they won’t get a good niche going like Zappa did.
I think it’s one of those rare times where I’m a little perplexed as to what to say about the music. I know it’s good. Do you?
