Another musician meet-up notched under the belt last night, another on the way for this evening. I met someone last night that made me kind of curious about something. More of a behavior kind of something.
In the middle of a conversation it came to a point where this person mentioned he was good friends with someone that I’m good friends with. Mind you, I really don’t know all of my friend’s friends. He’s been a big wig to non-signed musicians for a long time. Thus he knows, or probably knows a whole lot of people. While he contacts me when he’s in town, I would suspect that puts me on a short list of people he regularly stays in contact with. So imagine my surprise when after I mention something about a recent evening I had with my friend, this guy I meet suddenly asks: what’s he up to now?
Uh…
That question seems a little strange coming on the heels of saying you’re a good friend with someone. At least it’s odd to me. I have friends that maybe I haven’t spoken to in a year, and while we’re friends I probably wouldn’t call them great friends. In that case if I cared I’d ask what they’re up to. Anyway, it got me to thinking cause it felt out of context in the conversation.
There’s a scene in Vanilla Sky where Jason Lee is talking to Tom Cruise and says can I tell you the truth and Tom replies people always do… I get the same sort of feel when people are compelled to tell me about friends I no longer associate with. Which is weird, especially if I don’t ask.
I guess that little awkwardness is what leads me into today’s choice. How odd would it be to find a character that you think you know well somewhere that doesn’t make any sense based on tradition. I’m not sure where I ever came up with the idea to have a guy see Santa on vacation. Yet, that’s the impetus behind the story in today’s song.
Musically it’s also following the vibe of being somewhere like Hawaii. It’s one of those things where it’s so opposite that it is odd. What is cool for me to hear is that I have people tell me how much they really like this song. I wonder if it’s the laid back rasp going on in my voice as I’m doing my best beach bum impression? Or is it possibly the guitar solo that is performed by one of the guest appearances of my musical friends, Ben Carey. That’s right if you’re a fan of Lifehouse this song features their touring guitarist doing a guest spot playing the solo here.
Maybe it’s because people would love to find Santa doing something that doesn’t have anything to do with snow. I don’t know.
Whatever the reason it’s fine with me. I like it when I get emails or comments of people telling me how much they enjoy the song. How about you?
