Oh the things we do to get things done on a deadline. Yesterday afternoon I was looking thru my e-mail and found a notice from a few days ago where a film needed a song. They had an example of what they already had but needed something a little more racy. Having been to a meeting for AES the night before I had a chat with a buddy about the type of song.
He had something. Thus I changed my tactic for the and e-mailed the source to find out if they still needed a song. They did. I set out to write some lyrics. I came up with the idea pretty quick. Then came the details of what type of vocal they needed. A female. At which point it became a scramble to find a vocalist that could do it and do it as soon as possible. I have to give props to Winifred. She came to the rescue.
The session was to start at 11 p.m. However it didn’t really get rolling until about 1 a.m. The co-writer had come up with a melody that meant changes to the words. That took time. There there were issues getting the files back and forth. Finally I had everything set and started working through the vocals. The recording ended around 5:20 and mixing promptly came immediately after as they needed it at 6 a.m.
I finally hit the pillow around 6:30. Then was up around 9 a.m. for a drum session at 10 a.m. for yet another song. I was a little late to the session today and I’m feeling a tad slow in the decision process. But I’ve survived and I’m plowing ahead.
In light of that, I figured I’d look for a song about being up all night. There’s only a couple that come to mind immediately. This was one of them. Since I had it near by, I picked it. Nothing like an era gone by that was all about the party and stayin’ up late. I’m sure it was a fun time to be a musician. Probably not the same type of stress that happens now when under the gun. I’ve heard stories of unlimited budgets and taking all the time in the world. I don’t know if Slaughter was like that but hey.
I will say that Slaughter, Mark that is, has a very unique voice. I’m pretty sure that if he was recording music now. Maybe he is. His music would still be defined by his vocal. It’s definitely him. I don’t know if I can think of other singers that sound entirely like him.
Go study your hair metal era. If you don’t have some Slaughter, go visit the sites and make your purchases!
