Last night I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall. A buddy called me up and said hey let’s go see it. I figure it’s produced by Apatow it must be good. It was good. Actually it’s really good. Talk about painting a real normal good guy and putting him in the situation of a breakup and you’ve got comedy. No doubt. I don’t want to spoil the movie other than to say if you like comedy with a lot of outright humor and suggestive humor, then this is a flick for you.
Other interesting tidbits… During a bar scene the local band in hawaii is performing More Than Words in Hawaiian (I actually don’t know what they called the native tongue on the islands). That was funny to hear that. Later in the movie I heard yet another big hit written by Prince, made famous by Sinéad O’Conner, in case you’re not familiar it’s called Nothing Compares To You. Again in Hawaiian. Very funny. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the two female stars are gorgeous.
The main character Peter is a musician with a dream of doing a rather bizarre musical. When you see the film you’ll get what I mean. It’s quite quirky. Stay with me as I’m connecting it to today’s choice. Because of the quirky it relates to Sweeter Than This. Mostly because the ending of Forgetting Sarah Marshall is somewhat sweet if you’re a romantic.
Katie on the other hand is truly quirky. I would state that she’d be perfect in the soundtrack to something like Garden State, however her CD Baby page already says it. It’s right on the mark. So Zak, if you’re going to be doing a Garden State part two maybe Upstate Garden, then you’ll enlist Katie for that soundtrack. It’s a moving experience.
I like the groove being setup. There’s little guitar hits of all kinds of different guitars going on. Some dark little hits, some slide stuff and other little noises that clearly define a very rhythmic setting. Remember I’m really into rhythm. So there’s no way I’m not gonna like this. Somewhere in the mix I feel like I’m hearing a couple of coconut half shells being clopped together like in a Monty Python movie or something. I’m pretty sure that’s not what was used, but it’s the impression I get. It’s a mesmerizing thing. Maybe a good term for it would be a bohemian rhythm circle with melodies that stick to your brain matter.
She’s obviously surrounding herself with some great musicians and creating a uniquely Katie Herzig sound and I very much can appreciate it. Don’t you? Go show Katie how sweet you can be by buying the CD. It’s got more goods than I can describe here. Enjoy!
