Even amidst all the cheeriness of the holiday season, despite the Christmas gifts, the Kwanzaa sentiments, hanukkah candles, etc… Some people aren’t experiencing those joys. Even more odd is that the past two movies I’ve seen are actually a tad dark. I Am Legend was well done in terms of the acting. However the story was lacking and dark. It didn’t feel completed. Which left me a little flat. Will Smith turned in a great performance though. Then last night I saw Awake. I’m guessing that it’s not on too many people’s radar. It hasn’t gotten a lot of press. Yet it stars Jessica Alba, Hayden Christensen, Lena Olin, and Terrence Howard.
Awake is very twisted. Storywise it’s much more complete. In fact it’s quite good. However, it’s a tad frightening. To think of the lengths some people will go to do something. If you can’t stand the site of surgery, you may wish to skip this movie. There are a couple of graphic scenes involving surgery. The concept is that despite the anesthesia, some people remain awake during the procedure. Unable to move or do anything, but fully aware, able to feel pain, and hear. I had surgery on my knee after a major ski accident. I remember when the doc asked me to start counting backwards from 100. At some point during my countdown the doc told me I set a record, I got another 10 counts past that before I was out.
Fortunately I wasn’t one of those people who stayed awake. However, based on some of the commentary I got from a friend who was in the room during the surgery, I wish I had been. Apparently your body does some interesting things when you’re under and one of the nurses took notice. I need not say much more.
Way off on a tangent there. Coming back around. Why is it all of these dark movies are debuting during the holidays? It’s a little odd. Don’t ya think?
Today’s song is one I came across on a songwriters forum that I’m a member of. It was linked in by a writer named Ande Rasmussen. He co-wrote this song with John Gilliam. In case you haven’t been sticking with me or exploring much of the past on Single of the Day, the artist performing the song, Halie Loren has been featured here before. This is a new song for her – at least I’m guessing it is because it’s not for sale just yet.
When I clicked on Ande’s link I actually had no clue who was doing the co-write or singing. I didn’t notice until the moment I started the post. However, the vibe jumped right out at me in an instant. I was hooked by the vocal and the tone. It’s very fitting for some of the events I’ve seen, and some of the stuff friends of mine have been going through. For them it’s been a much bluer holiday this year than those of the past.
I didn’t dig up my own post of Halie, but I’m sure I must have said something about her voice and it’s sultry quality. If that isn’t the case, I’m saying it now. I’m grooving on the gloomy sultry of the vocal. It’s perfect for the tone of the song. I’d say it would be an appropriate idea for Ande, John or Halie to get it out as a single asap. Don’t you?
I hope your holiday isn’t as blue as the song. In fact, I hope it’s the exact opposite. Go make the difference. Don’t be sad that this song is a Sunday’s Child. I’m sure they’ll get it out before too long.
