Stuff, stuff, stuff. So many people with so much stuff. How do we get so much stuff and why do we get so much stuff? For the most part, I’m fairly spartan. I have a few things that are essential and I’m pretty good about not having lots of clutter, but even still, I still have stuff. I don’t even have a TV, but I still have stuff. Most of my stuff relates to what I do for a living, the whole music thing. So that’s not so bad but there’s still a lot of stuff. Funny when people think I don’t have much in my house.
Speaking of stuff. A friend of mine has taken it upon himself to reduce the amount of his stuff. I noticed his new messages under his IM window and didn’t really think much of it (http://www.600Things.com). That is until this morning. I got an e-mail from Grant explaining that he was going to be featured on NPR. I thought to myself “Self, that’s pretty cool for Grant.” Thus my interest was piqued. I visited his website www.600Things.com and poked around. There I learned what it was all about.
Ever since I’ve known Grant, he’s had lots and lots of stuff. Lots of collectible stuff and assorted extra stuff. Yet something recently got to him about reducing his stuff. His goal is to get his life down to 600 things that he owns. When you think about it, that’s still a lot of stuff. My last girlfriend Erin has a lot of stuff too. Even with as spartan as I am in my possessions, I’m pretty darn sure I’ve got more than 600 things. Some of it though, I know I can get rid of. Which is exactly what Grant is doing and doing well. So well in fact he’s caught the ear of NPR. I recommend you check out his site (since you’re listening to his music) and send him some support.
Speaking of stuff I need to get rid of…
I have 5 books on things related to Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash). I have “Flash For Windows & Mac 4”, “Flash 5”, “XML For Flash”, “Object Oriented Actionscript”, “Macromedia Actionscript Components”, and a book about Final Cut “Final Cut 3”.
If you’re a Flash programmer these are great books to have. I did a little flash stuff for my official music website and had them for that purpose. They’re all in great shape (like new). I’ll give them to anyone that wants them, so long as you pay for the shipping. That’s well over a couple hundred dollars in books all for the cost of shipping. Any takers?
In the meantime, this song represents one way people tend to end up with stuff. It’s easy to collect stuff when you’re living at home with the ‘rents. I know I did it before I moved out. Mostly because I was living cheap, make it easy to get things. Oy, that means there’s still some of my stuff at my mom’s house. I know she’s been going through and getting rid of stuff. Kinda in line with some of the things I’ve been doing lately. Consolidating stuff. I should start tackling my shed to get rid of old boxes. Which I started doing, now that I think about it. How about you? Motivated to get rid of stuff?
Oh, and if you’re over 24 and still living at home – GET OUT!
