Unlike yesterday’s jaunt down pop history lane, today we’re still flying but with a much more recent artist. Still waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting, on the IRS.
I wonder how many different acronyms could be made for IRS? Care to take a stab at some? Leave me a comment? Independent Rear Suspension seems to be a funny one. Especially if you think in non-car related terms. Here’s one I’m wishing it would be at the moment: Information Retrieval System, well it is but it’s Insanely Really Slow at doing it’s currently requested job. C’mon, what’s your favorite name for them?
Meanwhile, back at the ranch…
Goose Bumps, the song I’ve been co-writing with Jan Linder-Koda and Heather Bradley is finally on the finishing block. I’ll be working on a mix of it today. As you can imagine from the title it’s a children’s song. In the immortal words of Spinal Tap it’s a bit “ragga”.
Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy, Billy. C’mon Billy Barule… Opps, that’s a reference to a comedy movie. I meant Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Nelly, Whoa, Nelly! She sorta blasted on to the scene a few years ago with this tune. I liked this song primarily for it’s layers of vocals. The delays that were used to create the cascading feeling you get while listening are highly effective in pushing this melody further into your brain. Another thing that I like about that effect is that it really gives a vibe of being like a bird flowing on the wind.
If there is another pop artist that has taken loops and samples to such a grooved out place I’m not sure I’ve come across them. Nelly’s producers are certainly steeped in the cutting and pasting of sounds. Fortunately for her it has worked to great effect. I’ve seen a few live performances of this song. The melody works quite well a cappella, however I think that the song done with other instruments other than the backing track you hear on the album – tends to fall apart. Sadly I did see a version with Nelly backed with a solo guitar performance by one of the great guitar players in the last 20 years and it really didn’t work for me, I think it was more the sound and the lack of a groove. Good thing this version doesn’t lack the sound or the groove.
Will you fly today?
