As was anticipated for yesterday, I got to take a helicopter ride over Bryce Canyon. In case you’re not familiar with Bryce Canyon it’s in southern Utah off of a couple of very scenic highways, well, one called highway 12 and it’s also very close to highway 89. I’ve been to Bryce several times in the past, in fact I remember hiking down into it on a few occasions. I’ve also had the pleasure of doing a horseback ride loop through Bryce as well.
Hands down the helicopter excursion over Bryce is now my favorite. I got to see more of Bryce than I’ve ever been able to see in one sitting. It’s unbelievably stunning. It was my second time ever flying in a helicopter and boy it was fun. It’s really not like flying, it’s more like floating. I can’t wait to look back upon some of the pictures that we got to take from the helicopter. If you get to Bryce, you’ll fully understand why it is that I chose True Colors as the song for today. If you’ve never been there is only one thing to say: GO!
After Bryce we hopped in the car and headed out to Calf Creek to hike up to Calf Creek Falls. Yet another amazing setting. The hike itself is about 2.5 miles up from the camp grounds to get to the falls. It’s a tad warm on the trail and there’s some spots where I would have been better suited to have brought my hiking boots with me (silly me for not bringing them along). As you wind up through the canyon it’s easy to be reminded of what it’s like to be boating in some narrow canyons at Lake Powell. Never been there either? Again, GO!
Once you reach Calf Creek Falls, there is a giant pool of water that is being fed by an amazing waterfall. My sister was the first brave soul to go diving into the water. I was already in, but only wading. It was damn cold water and I was overly warm from the hike. I got out for about 3 minutes then turned around and went running full speed into the pool and dove in and swam as best I could manage to get under the falls. Shockingly cold, but extremely refreshing. The colors of the canyons at Calf Creek are different from Bryce but also very stunning, especially when you can see where the water coming dripping down the rock from rain storms.
We ended up at Boulder Mountain Lodge. It was much needed rest after such a colorful day. Not to mention a fantastic diner at their restaurant. If you travel here, I recommend it.
As for Cyndi…
What can I possibly say. It’s tough calling her a Fallen Friday. Mostly because I’ve heard lots of her music while I was growing up. This song I think was written by Prince though don’t quote me on that, I think it’s masterfully sung by Cyndi. I can get lost in this song. Much the same way I could get lost in Bryce and Calf Creek and all those wonderful colors. I realize that Cyndi’s song is about knowing the true nature of the person you are with, but I don’t care. Colors are colors and real or not I’m sticking to it.
I wish I could remember the very first time I heard this song. That way I’d have some really interesting story to append here. Alas, I can’t remember. What I can say is, that I dig Cyndi’s vibe, she always seemed to go her own route. I’m sure she’s still out there pounding away. Unfortunately she’s just not in the limelight like she once was.
(** Disclaimer: If Cyndi’s label isn’t happy with my colorful post, I’ll have to blot out the audio from the server. The post will remain to show my deep appreciation for some of the most beautiful land in the world. **)
