Yesterday I got to hold the iPhone in my hands and play with it. In case you weren’t aware, I am an Apple fan. I was not one of the ones who went to stand in line to be the first to get one. But an old friend of mine did. So I played with his at a party. Part of the reason I haven’t run right out to get one is because I’m not fond of at&t. Also because I currently have an aging Treo 650 that I’ve had for as long as it’s been out.
My Treo does quite a few things that the iPhone still has yet to add to it’s arsenal. But even with those few moments of playing with the iPhone I was so impressed with it that I almost went and got one. I’m already out of my contract with Sprint (I’m month to month and have been since about November). They’ve been buggin me for months to get me to resign a contract. Every time they ask I told them I’m waiting on the iPhone. Words I’m sure they didn’t want to hear.
My test case for it is my friend Blake. He’s extremely rough on cell phones. If it can survive a month with him, I’ll probably spring for an iPhone in July. Actually I’ll probably wait until they add some things to the phone like MMS messaging. Video capture. Not 3G yet. No GPS. Can’t cut n past text. Non-removable battery. No 3rd party apps. No Chat capability. Ringtones. Actually I’m a little concerned about the ringtone portion. Rumor has it that Apple will allow the ability to create your own ringtones but it will cost you a buck to put it on the phone. Why does that concern me? Well I use snippets of my own songs for specific things. Why would I want to pay to use my own songs? I already have it with the Treo and it doesn’t cost me a cent to change my ringtones of my stuff. That’s another wait and see thing. Maybe it won’t be impossible, who knows.
In case you were counting my missing features for the iPhone it added up to 9. Today’s artist has a new CD called 9 Impossible Proofs. I met Austin at the Gypsy Lounge. He was playing guitar backing up another artist Renee Wilson. We were part of the final round of the evening of songwriters. I really like Austin’s guitar playing. You can tell when an artist has a solid ability to play their instrument and Austin is one of those musicians. Before I played my final song I had mention Single of the Day to the crowd and that I would be looking to feature Austin and Renee’s music here. Anyway, I asked Austin what his CD title meant and if he was a mathematician. He said he liked numbers but wasn’t a math wiz. As for the Apple iPhone things I pointed out, they’re not impossible fixes, though the GPS and 3G things would likely require a new physical phone purchase.
Austin has a real cool presence. Something that I think comes from knowing you’re good and having played a lot of shows. The music you’re listening to right now is from his upcoming CD that is about to be released. In a way this is a cool sneak peak for ya. Obviously when he gets it onto CD Baby and iTunes I’ll update this posting.
I will say that when it comes to my eventual touring and once I’m headlining I will see if Austin is interested in opening. I like his vibe. I like his flow. I like his voice. I like his harmonies. I like his musical sensibility. I would hope by the same token that if he beats me to the headlining tour thing that he might be as interested in having me as the opener. I will suggest that you cruise to his website to check out his previous CD’s. Sign up on his e-mail list or bookmark this post (the RSS link) to see when it gets updated with the purchase links. I think you’ll be very happy with the rest of the CD and will want to get the whole thing.
Now go outside and accomplish something that used to be impossible.
