Last night was a cool little songwriters showcase in Orange County California. It was held at The Gypsy Lounge. If you haven’t been there, and you live in Orange County, you really ought to make a note of going next month. You get a good cross section of songwriters, and even some performers. I oughta know, I was one of them last night. I give kudos to all the performers from last night. I know that several will eventually be featured here on the blog.
Thus in a way you will get to experience some of the talent I got to share the stage with.
Today’s Fallen Friday is actually a truly a Fallen Friday. The irony is that Aaliyah is no longer around to try again. I do remember this song coming out. I can remember that I wasn’t a big fan of this style of music, but there was something about this particular song that really grabbed my attention. That thing that grabbed me was the vocal. Actually the vocal production. It’s insanely good.
Around the same time there were other female R ‘n’ B artists/bands doing a lot of the same thing. So of course I started branching out in my tastes.
As the story goes Aaliyah met an unfortunate fate right around the same time as this movie was being done. We won’t hear anything further from her, but at least there is this. If you haven’t got it and you need an anthem for dusting yourself off, this is it. I know it’s about the interaction between an object of desire and a person chasing them, but it can work for much more than that. Don’t have it? Get it.
You’ll have to pardon me, I’m off to watch Sicko. I’ll probably have some thoughts about it tomorrow.
(** Disclaimer: If Aaliyah’s label decides they’re not happy with my trying to showcase the song, I’ll have to alleviate the audio off the server. The post will remain, just because. **)
