So often certain days of the week get a bad rap. Monday’s in particular are frowned on by many people. Lots of songs and phrases express that displeasure: “Rainy day’s and Mondays always get me down”, “I hate Mondays”, “Monday means work”, “You know the weekend is over on Monday”, etc… I’m positive that I’m missing tons of Monday statements – so please add them to the comments list.
This song is what I would consider a brilliant little slice of brit pop/pop music that gives the listener a sweet upbeat feeling. I have to thank my friend Kevin Packard for turning me on to it, along with a bunch of other artists when he created a mix-CD for me. I got a few musical favorites that I then pulled off iTunes. It actually was a pain in the ass to figure out some of the artists because Kevin didn’t actually give me a written list of who was on it. Google to the rescue, I typed in some of the lyrics and voila I was able to find out several of the artists and buy them.
The beautiful thing about music is it’s ability to change your mood at a moments notice. I’m betting that I could be in a severe funk or depression and this song could come on and immediately I’d start bobbin my head up and down as well as back and forth. At that point, I’ll be humming along. Bullshit, I’d be singing it at the top of my lungs because it’s such a spunky melody. Despite me being a guy and this song being sung by a girl I’m still squeezing my nuts attempting to eek out those highs notes with a smile on my face. It’s a very happy song.
Why would I be happy? I got a chance yesterday to hang at the CD Baby meet & greet at the Hotel Cafe. It was Derek Sivers, his current squeeze, and roughly 175 non-signed artists all sharing a common goal of meeting others in the music business and having a good time listening to one of the truly great minds in music today – Derek Sivers. After his impromptu presentation he allowed those who wanted to help others speak up and make the offer. So of course I raised my hand to mention your favorite once-a-day stop known as Single of the Day.
After Derek stepped off the stage the response I got was overwhelming. So many people wanted to say hi it was amazing. I even met a recent Single of the Day artist – Jared Kessler. It’s cool to know that people are out there and care. Needless to say I ended up being unprepared for the number of CD’s that I was given. My hand is finally recovering from having to carry them back to the car. I’ve already gotten through about half the stack of physical discs. I also have a stack of business cards with myspace & CD Baby addresses that I need to sort through as well. I’ve already found a few that I’ll be featuring here this week.
My plan for today is to get you to sit up and get your ears to take notice as you’re there in your cubicle needing a little pick-me-up for your Monday morning. I’m willing to bet you’ve your toes tapping right now and likely already humming as well. The shocker I learned is that this is one of the former Spice Girls singing this song. Melanie C. The girl has got some pipes built into her neck and it’s far cry from the packaged Spice Girl stuff. So, if you don’t have it, do like I did, go get it now. I know you’ll need it again next Monday and everyone wants someone to make them feel fine on a Monday.
(** Disclaimer: If Melanie’s label decides to Suddenly scare me on a Monday with a letter, I’ll have to fly the audio right off the server. The post will remain to show that it is possible to overcome Monday’s cliches. **)
