Ok, I’ll admit something that maybe I haven’t mentioned here before – I’m a fan of the show LOST. But how can that be you ask, cause you know I don’t own a TV. Well, I don’t live in a black hole. Lucky for me there are other ways and means to get the show. One of the best is called iTunes. For $1.99 I can download an episode and away I go. No commercials and it’s right there ready for me to watch in a few minutes. At least that is how I started into the first season and a half. Lately I’ve been visiting Erin’s house as she has a TiVo where I’ve gotten her hooked on the show. She records it, I visit, we watch skipping commercials.
I would have caught the episode last night, but silly me. I thought I’d was over the flu on Tuesday and got a rude reminder yesterday. Ear plugged back up. Nose plugged back up. Coughing came back. Whoopie. So, instead of doing that, I opted to remain home and keep to resting. I was getting bored with reading the latest news every 5 minutes on CNN.com so I finally decided to watch a show called Heroes.
One of the main reasons is because a Myspace ‘friend’ of mine is Milo Ventimiglia. We’ve actually never met face to face yet. I can’t remember who contacted who first, but I knew another friend of his on Myspace (who is like his best friend), but I’ve never met them face to face yet either. Anyway, somehow we got to messaging and as such. He’s very personable which is cool. I actually knew who he was because I have one of his movies on DVD (Winter Break). I’ve probably mentioned it before but I love movies about skiing. Winter Break is one of those kinds of movies.
Anyway, he’s one of the stars of the show and I’ve been meaning to getting around to watching it but didn’t have as much time to do so until last night and being ill. Funny that. Not really, but whatever. Well, I watched the episode and dammit, I’ve purchased and downloaded the next one already. I already left Milo a comment on his page and I’m sure I’ll hear back about it. The show is off to a good start.
As much as really dig LOST, it’s kinda running in too many directions. The core of the show seems Lost (pun intended). The story lines move too slow and follow too few characters per episode now. Like they’re attempting to stretch out a story line into a longer story than originally intended. I’m also a little disappointed that they’ve started introducing characters from the plane wreck without any regard to their backstory, or why they weren’t introduced in the first season or second season. You’d think 40 some odd survivors would be accounted for within a season. I guess not. I’m hoping the episode from last night starts to kick things back up a notch. As the sneak peak from last week looked like it would.
Anyway, getting to the song you’re hearing is sorta like the theme in Heroes, LOST, or my damn flu – things aren’t always what they seem. Gavin is on course to be a pretty damn prolific musician. I thought I’ve written a lot of music, but I think Gavin has written more. One thing I’ve learned about my own writing is that I enjoy it more if I don’t just spit it out, which is what I used to do. While sifting through Gavin’s material, I noticed a lot of it isn’t going to be huge commericially, but he’s certainly got a lot of cool ideas. This song in particular is quite funny to me.
From a lot of the rap and hip hop that I’ve heard and actually produced it’s never been about the super slick production. Most rap and hip hop has quite horrible production and what’s amazing about it is how much some of the big names charge to create a track, sometimes upwards of over $150,000. For a few samples and some drum machine production. Hey, more power to them if they can get away with it. Gavin has a very raw setup going on this song, it fits the mold of a lot of rap productionwise, but even so it’s still much cleaner than most tracks I’ve heard. I don’t mean cleaner lyrically, I mean noise in the recording wise.
If for nothing else, I think it’s a fun song because of the story about being a painter with mad skills who pays his bills by rapping. That’s damn funny when most rappers aren’t making much money for realz. All the stuff you see, the Bentley’s, the cash, the cribs, the clothes, the women, etc… it’s all rented in the videos. As was once a slogan for Nikon and Agassi – Image is Everything. Get the song. If you’re into exploring a growing cavern of music – then visit gavin’s website and other sites on the web. He’s got a lot to hear.
