Everything is grand when you have a good day, or even a great day. Isn’t it? Yesterday was supposed to be a heavy rains in Los Angeles. But it was over by morning so no rain to see. I ended up playing some poker with my buddy Mike. We played a tournament at Hollywood Park. The tournament didn’t go well, but we played cash afterwards and I ended up pullling in a sizeable win there. That was a plus. Then we met up with Erin at the Bridge and watched the movie Music & Lyrics. Not a bad day. A good break from all the work I’d been doing recently.
Sometime’s it just takes a little change can make a big difference in your outlook. I recently read a blog on the net about the current state of CD’s. It in he mentions that music is going back to the idea of Singles and not the full CD. Well, I’m pretty sure that he’s right about it. Heck what the hell am I promoting here? Singles. Though I hope you (the reader/listner) would explore the rest of an artist’s catalog or CD. I’m fully aware of the fact that most people have limited time, want something now, and when it comes to music, to be as easy as possible to listen to. Hence, why I chose iTunes for making direct links to for promoting the music. Most people have it, and it’s super easy.
Every now and then I take the time to search out music by other artists and I’ll put out the feelers to them to let them know I like their music (pointing out the song I’d like to blog on), and keep my fingers crossed that they like the format I’m using here and be willing to let me impart a few words about life and their music, or whatever I end up rambling about. I ocassionally get an e-mail of surprise from someone I know who happens across the blog and realizes they know me and didn’t know I was doing something like this. It gives me a warm fuzzy knowing people remember me and recognize, then contact me to let me know they like what they’ve discovered. My hope is that they’ll tell two friends to give Single of the Day a listen as well.
Emily is one such artist I made contact with a while ago. So much so, that I practically forgot I had corresponded with her. Then a couple of nights ago, I finally heard back from her and voilá her she is today. I think one of the things I liked was the neo-soul and slightly bluesy feel she had going on. I do think the recording would send the song over the top if it was polished up just a little more. That’s really only a personal preference of mine for a song in this style. Emily has a nice smooth voice. I get the feeling she wrote this about someone she’s been longing for. Thinking about it now, the timing on her with the e-mail and me seeing Music & Lyrics last night is pretty darn good.
The movie is about a has been pop icon who experiences a come back, but only because he’s found an unlikely writing partner by random chance. They fall in love. Of course they have to strip each others faults down and thrust them in each others face, push away, and then finally end up together. Unlike Emily’s chorus line, these two characters did put up a bit of a fight. Despite that I think her song would have worked well in the soundtrack of the film. There were definitely a few moments where it would have been just right.
** As a side note, while I was watching the flick, I was thinking about how the music sounded very familiar. Like I tend to do anytime I recognize something in a movie, I stay for the credits. Sure enough as I thought the main song was written by Adam Schlessinger. In case that name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the cat that wrote “That Thing You Do”. I think it was the chord progression that made me think of him. **
Anyway, I suggest looking up Emily’s music and seeing if you find yourself any other gems.
