Still reeling from yesterday’s announcement of the iPhone by Apple. Yikes. What a device that is. It’s actually caused me to research Cingular, it’s service, it’s coverage, it’s pricing, etc… Funny thing is I’ve been pretty happy with Sprint (for the most part, I’ve had some issues in the past – but they got rectified). I’m reading consumer reports much to my chagrin Cingular & Sprint are considered the worst for coverage and customer service. Which worries me. I’ve had pretty good results with Sprint and a Palm Treo 650. Makes me wonder what I’ve possibly been missing out on with Verizon & T-Mobile (which have been rated tops).
Before I went Sprint, I had AT&T. AT&T is now in the process of buying up all it’s busted companies. This includes Cingular from what I understand. I remember issues with AT&T, enough so to actually switch to Sprint. The iPhone is slated to be Cingular only until the end of 2008. At some point during that time frame, I expect Cingular becomes no more and rolls into AT&T – if the news is correct about the merger. I don’t know anyone currently with AT&T for their mobile service. But I do have some friends with Cingular. All of the friends I have that are currently with Cingular like the service. One friend who had it – left because it sucked nationally (he’s planning on switching back strictly for the iPhone – how bad could it have been?).
The thing I dig most about the prospect of the iPhone, ease of use. Things that concern me… Can it be used as a modem for wireless connectivity for a laptop (something I can do now with the Treo and is included in my old-ass plan from Sprint). Will it be 3G compatible via a firmware or software upgrade – seems Apple claims it will go 3G, but not at launch. Will the iPhone be unlockable for international travel. Remains to be seen. The phone cost is pricey, but for what it can already do, it’s reasonable. The cost of phone use from Cingular has me concerned. I’ve been unable to find a plan similar to mine, especially with the data part of it for text messages and net usage via the phone/laptop thing. Weird how a device would dictate this kind of thinking. But I’m doing it.
So far I’ve come across a pretty good size of people that I know who are interested in pre-ordering this iPhone by Apple and that’s darned amazing when I think about it. Device envy will certainly run rampant with the iPhone. I’m excited by the prospects of where the device can go. Being that it’s built on OSX, if they open the development, all kinds of great apps and compatibility will happen. The beauty of it for me right now is that my contract with Sprint is up and I’m month to month, no switch over fees. Woo Hoo.
Apple has certainly done the concept of the futuristic cell phone right. Wall Street is even showing that fact. Apple’s stock shot up $7 in a day, all the other phone makers stocks dropped. In the matter of one hour the entire mobile market got a big swift kick in the ass. That is being done right. It was needed.
Kyle is singing about doing a girl right. I’m thinking it’s about sex, but chances are when asked he’d say about the relationship. It’s all double entendre as it is anyway. I like the space the recording has. It’s quite intimate. I on the fence as to whether or not he’s capable enough to pull off this type of sound. But what the hell, its like my decision with the iPhone. I love the concept, just not sure it’s gonna fly. I hope it does though.
(** Disclaimer: If Kyle’s label decides to not do me right, I’ll be dropping his song like a bad habit. The post will remain as a reminder of what could have been. **)
